Application for Lecturer


The University Center for Human Values is seeking qualified graduate students or scholars to teach precepts in the fall 2017 course "Practical Ethics" at Princeton University.

 

Applicants must have taken a course in ethics. Interested applicants must submit a CV, a letter detailing their knowledge of ethics and their teaching experience, and the names and contact information of up to three professors who can testify to their teaching experience. Letters of recommendation will only be requested if candidates are shortlisted.

 

Course description: Should we be sharing our wealth with people who will otherwise die from poverty-related causes? Is abortion wrong? Does a human embryo have a greater claim to protection than a chimpanzee? Are we justified in eating animals? Can the traditional doctrine of the sanctity of human life be defended? And why should we act ethically, anyway? You will be encouraged to question your own ethical beliefs on these and other issues, and in the process to explore the extent to which reason and argument can play a role in everyday ethical decision-making.

 

Review of applications to begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The position begins September 1, 2017 for the five months of the fall 2017 semester. Preceptors are not compensated additionally for grading, attending lectures, staff meetings or holding office hours. Each hour-long precept assumes at least two hours of preparation.
