The University of Toronto invites applications for a joint tenure-stream, endowed chair appointment in the Department of Political Science (51%) and the Munk School of Global Affairs (49%) in the area of Japanese Politics and Global Affairs. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor and will commence July 1, 2018.


The successful candidate must have a PhD in Political Science, International Relations, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment and be able to provide strong evidence of innovative research of an internationally competitive calibre, as evidenced by a record of sustained contributions or publications in leading journals in the field, presentations at significant conferences, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.


Candidates should also have an established international reputation based on a scholarly record of excellence appropriate to their career stage. Evidence of excellence in teaching and a demonstrated commitment to graduate education and mentorship are required. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by strong letters of reference, teaching evaluations, graduate supervision, dossier and/or syllabi submitted as part of the application. The ideal candidate will focus on Japanese politics and policy in comparative and international perspective and have an interest in directing a new Centre for the Study of Global Japan recently established in the Munk School to stimulate collaborative scholarship and public outreach.


The appointment will be contingent upon a successful tenure review. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
