The University College Freiburg is looking for a
Research Associate in International Institutions (50%)
Part-time position (50%), start date: 01.10.2017


This research position is funded by the University of Freiburg's Research Innovation Fund, initially for the duration of 6 months (October 2017 – March 2018). The main task of the research associate is to participate in the research project “Happily Ever After: Authority and Legitimacy of International Organizations in the Process of Treaty Monitoring”. The successful candidate will work together with Dr. Liudmila Mikalayeva on developing the research proposal, which would offer further funding for the position. Additional funding possibilities, including teaching contracts, can be discussed.

 

The research project focuses on institutional innovations in international treaty monitoring: the ways in which treaty bodies of International organizations (IOs) exercise and expand their authority while monitoring the implementation of international treaties. The authority resources at the disposal of IOs, and the institutional innovations, aimed at developing and mobilizing authority resources are considered. The project uses conceptual tools from international relations and sociology of organizations to identify and explain variation in the use and success of innovations in different monitoring processes.

 

We expect candidates to have


- an advanced degree, Master or doctorate, in International Relations, Political Science, Sociology of Organizations, or Public Administration,
- an interest in and experience of interdisciplinary research in the field of international institutions,
- first experience of independent research and publication, and
- very good knowledge of English.

 

Commuting to Freiburg for a part of the week is possible. For employees of the University of Freiburg it may be possible to expand an existing part-time contract.
Successful candidate will be expected to take up the position on October 1, 2017.
