Lund University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Political Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is ranked recurrently as one of the world's 100 leading universities. There are 42,000 students and 7,400 employees in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our quest to understand, explain and improve our world and human condition.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of Sweden's leading knowledge centers for research and education in social sciences and behavioral science and operates in both Lund and Helsingborg.

The Department of Political Science combines ancient ancestors with modern research and education. In recent years, the department has been very successful in the competition for external research funds. Central research areas include democratization, diplomacy, peace and conflict, environmental policy and welfare. The Department of Political Science's strong research profile is reflected in the teaching. The institution's strong research profile is also reflected in our teaching. The education environment has long been highly internationalized.

Tasks

degree program in Political Science comprises 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years full-time studies) and ends with the doctoral student in public dissertation defending his printed doctoral dissertation. He who is employed as a PhD student receives salary from the university for four years and is principally to devote himself to his own postgraduate education. Institution services of up to 20 per cent of full-time may occur, primarily in the form of education, whereby the employment is extended to an equivalent extent. The doctoral student will have access to a workplace at the Department of Political Science. Provisions for the appointment of a PhD student are contained in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 chapters 1 to 7.

The employment is linked to the new wine research project in new ways: About the conditions for modern civil defenseled by Professor Rikard Bengtsson and funded by the Swedish Civil Protection and Emergency Agency (MSB). The project will start in 2018 and end in 2022. The overall objective of the project is to study, through a multilevel analysis, how the conditions for developing, strengthening and focusing civilian defense are influenced by key change processes in society (at national, administrative and international level). Sweden constitutes the empirical focus of the project, but the project includes comparative elements. The PhD student is expected to conduct research on a topic that relates to either of the above levels and which contributes to the overall framework and objectives of the project. Within these parameters, the doctoral student conducts independent research based on own questions, theories and methods.

The PhD student is expected to be present and actively participate in the research and teaching environment at the institution, as well as in the ongoing activities of the project, including reporting to MSB. The main working language of the postgraduate program is English, but in view of the project's focus and empirical focus, it is a requirement that the doctoral student has good knowledge of the Swedish language.

The appointment as a doctorate student will be held in 2018-09-01. Study plans and other information about postgraduate studies in political science are available at: http://www.svet.lu.se/forskning/forskarstudier
