The Faculty of Social Sciences is seeking to fill the following full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Sociology

 

Doctoral Grant (FWO-funded project): households and HIV care in South Africa

 

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of medical sociology.

  • You work in close collaboration with a research team of the University of the Western Cape (Cape Town, South Africa) on a cluster randomized controlled trial testing the intermediary role of households in HIV care in the townships of Cape Town.

  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Sociology (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Antwerp).

 

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in social, human or medical sciences, preferably in sociology, psychology, or public health.

  • You can submit outstanding academic results.

  • You have an interest in sociology of health & illness and public health.

  • You are capable of executing quantitative research.

  • You are capable of applying (or learning) advanced statistical analysis techniques (multi-level analysis, structural equation modeling).

  • Your academic English and writing skills allow you to successfully communicate research results.

  • You are willing to execute certain parts of your doctoral work at the University of the Western Cape (South Africa).

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

  • Also students in the final year of their degree can apply.

  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.

 

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;

  • the start date of scholarship will be September 1st, October 1st or November 1st 2018;

  • a monthly grant amount ranging from € 2.324,20 - € 2.469,08;

  • the possibility of a sandwich PhD at the School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.

  • A pre-selection will be made from amongst the submitted applications.

  • If you are shortlisted, you will be asked to send a piece of text you wrote (article, thesis,…), and you will be sent the full project proposal and you will be asked to write a 1-2 page critical response to this proposal.

  • The interviews will take place in the week of June 25th 2018.
