PhD fellow related to professional research


At the University of Agder, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Sociology and Social Work, there is a free 100% temporary position as a PhD student in professional research for a period of three years, possibly four years with a 25% employment obligation. The place of work is Kristiansand.


At the Faculty of Social Sciences it is approx. 75 added and approx. 1,500 students. The faculty has four institutes: Department of Political Science and Management, Department of Global Development and Social Planning, Department of Information Systems and the Department of Sociology and Social Work.


Description of the position


We wish to strengthen the Institute's research on profes- sions, and search for projects that utilize social science approaches in one or more of the following themes:

  • Digitization in public administration and / or in the meeting between citizen and professional
  • Cross-professional cooperation between child welfare and school, kindergarten or other public agencies
  • Professional work to promote work inclusion
  • Prophecies in change
  • Professionalization in a pluralistic society
  • Use of animal-assisted interventions in education and welfare profiles
  • Professional ethical challenges related to one of the mentioned areas

We seek original, empirical and theoretical project descriptions of high quality.


Qualifications and terms


The fellow student must have the necessary qualifications for admission to the faculty's PhD program and will be affiliated with one of the faculty's research groups. Access by appointment. More information about the faculty's research groups, doctoral programs and specializations can be found here: It is assumed that the candidate applying for admission to the Profres research school. More information about Profres:


The qualification requirement has been completed in mainstream / master's degree within social science subjects (social work, child welfare, sociology, social anthropology, etc.), with an average grade of B or better (including the master / main assignment). It is an advantage if the candidate has a good knowledge of Norwegian public administration. In addition, current applicants must have good Norwegian knowledge both in writing and verbally. The academic environment at the Department of Sociology and Social Work is characterized by close cooperation with the practice field on education and research, among other things through Praxis South Cooperation.


Further details of the position as a fellow student are set out in the Regulations on employment conditions for posts as postdoctoral, fellow, academic assistant and special candidate, determined by the Ministry of Education on 31 January 2006, pursuant to the Law on Universities and Colleges, Section 6-4.


Applicants will prepare a project description, which will follow the application. The project description shall cover up to 10 pages including literature list, and will present and discuss possible research questions, theoretic perspectives, materials and methods. The project description must also contain a progress plan for the work. The quality of the project description will be given great weight in the assessment of the applications. Applicants are ranked according to the applicants' expertise and potential. When assessing the applicants, emphasis is placed on the obtained exam results, the relevance of the academic background, any previously published work and documented development work, as well as the quality and relevance of the project description. Relevant practice, personal fitness and cooperation skills will also be emphasized. The position requires the ability to work targeted, tidy, concentrated and independent. It is important from the University that the candidate is to be ensured good guidance, among other things. with the appointment of two supervisors, PhD follow-up at the department and admission to research school. On request we can also provide some guidance on the project schedule.

The positions are placed in the National Wage Regulatory Wage Plan 17,515, 1017, kr. 436,900. From the salary, statutory deposits go to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
