The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of Sweden's leading knowledge centers for research and education in social sciences and behavioral science and operates in both Lund and Helsingborg.


The Sociological Department in Lund consists of three social sciences, pedagogy, sociology and social anthropology. Common to all three disciplines is that they all try to understand and explain how people organize themselves in social, cultural and historical contexts. The institution's research thus includes empirical studies of central contemporary problems, critical social analysis, and the development of social science theories and methods.


We are looking for a sociologist or social anthropologist at the beginning of his career. The duties cover research and teaching in sociology and social anthropology at basic and advanced level. The employment consists of at least 40 percent research and maximum 60 percent teaching and possible administration.


The tasks include conducting research in sociology / social anthropology of high international quality, as well as conducting high quality education at all levels of education. The employee is expected to actively contribute to positive development and in-depth research collaboration between the two departments of Sociology and Social Anthropology, including applying for external research and publishing. In addition, the holder of the service will actively contribute to the development of the departmental joint education program, which includes a new master's program in cultural criminology. Teaching should be conducted in both a Scandinavian language and English.



Qualifying to be employed as Assistant Associate Professor is the one who has obtained a doctorate or equivalent degree in sociology, social anthropology or equivalent scientific competence. Mainly, the applicant will be awarded a doctorate or have reached the corresponding competence no later than seven years before the end of the application period.


Requirements profile

The applicant must have a doctorate in sociology or social anthropology (or have achieved the corresponding scientific competence) as well as having teaching and research experience in sociology / social anthropology. High competence in qualitative methods and ethnographic field work is particularly meritorious, as well as knowledge of contemporary cultural theory. Experience in collaborating with external players is also an important merit. Ability to teach both a Scandinavian language and English is a requirement.


The applicant must be able to demonstrate proven scientific skill. Having obtained external research funding is a merit. Furthermore, applicants should be able to work independently, responsibly and structured with both education and research. Good collaborative skills are a requirement.


Assessment Basis

The employment is a qualification employment, as a result of which applicants who have dispatched a maximum of seven years prior to the announcement will be prioritized. The assessment will attach particular importance to the applicant's development potential as well as documented scientific skill, ability to develop research in the subject area and ability to obtain external research funding. Scientific proficiency includes international publication, independent research and participation in international collaboration, taking into consideration the degree of progression after dissertation. Great emphasis is also placed on educational ability. In addition, emphasis is placed on how the applicant's research matches the institution's research profile. The top rated candidates will be invited to a test lecture that also forms the basis for the assessment.


A Deputy Assistant Professor may, upon application, be promoted to a permanent appointment as Senior Lecturer. The application must be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences no later than three years and six months of employment. The eligibility and appropriateness of such employment is assessed by examining scientific and educational progression during the term of employment, emphasizing the following criteria.


  • Well-proven scientific skill. This includes a documented good level as a researcher. Special emphasis will be placed on international publication. Documented ability to formulate research applications for external funds.
  • Well-regarded pedagogical skills. Particular emphasis will be placed on the documented ability to conduct teaching and supervision at different levels and that the quality and breadth of teaching skills have evolved over time. Educational courses to the extent necessary for the qualification as a lecturer are required.
  • Progression in academic leadership through increased ability to develop, lead and implement education and research and / or demonstrated commitment / leadership for institutional tasks.
  • Good ability to interact with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work.
  • In examining the lecturer, equal attention will be paid to the educational and scientific skills.


Attachments, copies / certificates of grades, written statement of scientific and pedagogical proficiency (see instruction on educational merit portfolio) and the scientific papers referred to (maximum five jobs) are attached to the application. The applicant should also enclose a sketch (about 3-5 pages) showing what research he or she intends to do in the current employment, as well as how this fits into the institution's research profile.
