Department of Safety, Economics and Planning is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department carries out research and offers study programs at all levels within Risk Management, Societal Safety, Industrial Economics and Regional and urban planning. Our goal is to be an international leading research environment in the field.  There are currently 92 employees including research fellows and postdocs, and 550 students at the department.


Associate Professor in Technical Safety and Security in Societies


The University of Stavanger is seeking an Associate Professor in Technical Safety and Security in Societies.


Duties and academic community


The subject area for the position is Technical Safety and Security in Societies.


The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning.


As an Associate Professor, you will primarily teach and supervise students at bachelor’s, Master's and PhD level within technical safety and security, critical infrastructures, and design of technical safety systems, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research fields at the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses. The development/use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research, and academic/artistic development work, will be included in the position. Qualification requirements

We are seeking an associate professor with a PhD or equivalent qualification in the subject area. To obtain the position the candidate must possess technical and natural science based education, preferably with experiences from several scientific disciplines.


Applicants with a specialisation within technical safety and security, or critical infrastructures will be preferred, but applicants specialising in related areas may also be considered.


In addition to scientific merits, relevant professional practice from Norway or abroad will be important. Experience from research, development work and teaching will be considered.


You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, or complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date. The course will be provided by the university.

  • A reflective and conscientious attitude towards your own teaching and guidance activities.
  • Ability to involve and engage students in teaching, where the course's objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked.
  • Experience and/or interest in the development of varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching.
  • Research results published in recognised Norwegian and international publications, and references indicating progression in research and publications.
  • Ability to initiate, obtain external funding for, drive forward and carry out research and development projects.
  • Experience of partnerships with businesses.
  • Ability to build and nurture networks – regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Experience with innovation and commercialisation of research.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitiveness and motivation to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others.

The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. If you do not have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of two years of the appointment start date. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university.


In the absence of applicants with sufficient scientific expertise, the university may consider temporarily designating an appointee for up to three years, during which time he/she will endeavour to gain the qualifications necessary for a permanent position. The applicant must be capable of gaining the necessary qualifications during the period of employment.

In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works/documented artistic activity, and documented teaching competence. The committee will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.

Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

Job description – Associate Professor inTechnical Safety and Security in Societies


Subject area

The subject area for the position is technical safety and security in societies, in which combinations of competence in societal planning, infrastructures and its vulnerabilities, technical safety, regulation, safety and accident investigation, disaster and contingency planning, digitalization, transportation and climate change will be emphasized. Associate professor should hold competence in as many as possible of these subject areas.


The position is related to the master study programme in Technical Safety and Security in Society, but it is expected that the candidate contribute with teaching and supervision of PhD-candidates within the subject area. The position is part of a multidisciplinary environment that comprises risk management and societal safety.


Current works on societal safety is subjected to many and various hazards and risk, such as technological accidents and disasters, global dependencies (infrastructures, economy, pollution, crime, etc.), malicious acts (organized crime and terror) and climate challenges (locally and globally). These subjects require comprensive competencies in risk, vulnerability, systems theory, complexity and interdependencies. Associate professor should demonstrate knowledge about critical societal functions and issues that influences public trust in them. Knowledge about physical and technological hazards is important, but the associate professor must be able to assess the hazards in relation to structures in society and human relations, and how societies organize to meet the hazards.


Position within the organisation

The appointment is by the University of Stavanger. Within the organisation, the position is affiliated to Faculty of Technology and Science, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning. Relevant duties

In collaboration with other scientific personnel, associate professors are required to:



  • Contribute to the development of academically strong and relevant education programmes.
  • Further development and strengthening of the education programmes’ reputation by providing high-quality teaching and support at bachelor's, Master’s and PhD level.
  • Contribute to and develop relevant further education and continuing education courses.
  • Facilitate students’ learning in line with the learning objectives of the study programmes.
  • Drive forward pedagogical development work and the production of educational aids.
  • Participate in continuous training processes related to teaching and support.
  • Contribute to the development of new teaching methods and the use of different digital learning resources.
  • Carry out student evaluations and drive forward the continuous development of course quality.


Research, artistic development and innovation

  • Conduct research and drive forward academic and/or artistic development within the subject area.
  • Initiate, obtain external funding for, drive forward and carry out research and development projects.
  • Engage in applicable, business-oriented, profession-/practice-centred and/or socially relevant research, including assignments from and in collaboration with the public and private sectors, and the business world.
  • Participate in and develop research communities in connection with university programme areas or research groups.
  • Involve students in research and artistic development work.
  • Contribute to innovation and value creation based on results from research, professional and artistic development.

  • Participate in academic strategic work and in the development of new teaching subjects/disciplines.

  • Hold posts in national and international committees, as well as in UiS boards and commitees.


The successful applicant will be expected to support and participate in other faculty activities and to be able to perform tasks across departments and faculties.


An annual plan for future work will be established following discussion between the head of the department and associate professor, in accordance with the university's guidelines for work-planning.



UiS expects all scientific staff to undergo continuous training in relation to their own teaching and research.


During their first year, associate professors must participate in the university's colleague-based guidance programme, NyTi.


Associate professors who are unable to document sufficient pedagogic and didactic expertise with regards to higher education must complete a university pedagogy course within two years from their appointment.


Associate professors who do not have a command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 (in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Language) within a period of two years of the appointment start date.


Associate professors can apply for paid sabbaticals in accordance with the university's Guidelines for the Granting of Sabbaticals.


Associate professors can apply for promotion to full professor status in accordance with Section 2-2 of the "Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts".
