Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of education sciences

Alternative ways to success in education? A qualitative-ethnographic study of the educational initiatives developed by ‘vulnerable’ individuals and communities in Flanders

 

This research project studies the various initiatives developed by so-called vulnerable individuals and communities to achieve and/or increase success in education. Through applying a qualitative-ethnographic approach this research project will generate new insights on the role and impact of initiatives such as complementary schools and learning contexts, youth organisations taking over school tasks and newly established fulltime schools.

 

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of education sciences.

  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.

  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Training and Education Sciences.

 

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in pedagogical or educational sciences, in sociology, anthropology or in Social Sciences.

  • You can submit outstanding academic results.

  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

  • You have experience with qualitative and/or ethnographic research.

  • Familiarity with the domain of diversity, identity and educational sociology or anthropology is an asset.

  • You have excellent speaking, reading and writing skills in both English and Dutch.

  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software, such as Nvivo, is an asset.

 

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;

  • the start date of scholarship will be between April 1st and October 1st 2019;

  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.373,36 to € 2.516,73;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.

  • A pre-selection will be made from amongst the submitted applications.

  • The remainder of the selection procedure is specific to the position and will be determined by the selection panel.
