The School of Social and Political Sciences is at the forefront of teaching and research in the social sciences in Australia. The School has a team of dedicated academic and professional staff in the disciplines of Political Science, Criminology, Anthropology and Sociology as well as our allied research centres providing a dynamic and rewarding environment for staff and students.


The appointment of the Lecturer in Sociology will be made through the Melbourne Early Career Academic Fellowship program (MECAF) as defined in section 27 of The University of Melbourne Enterprise Agreement 2013. Staff engaged in this initiative will complete a structured development programme provided by the University within their workload allocation. This program will provide training, supervision and appropriate career and professional development opportunities towards establishing your academic career. The successful candidate will be required to commence teaching within the School in Semester 2, 2019.


The Lecturer in Sociology will have comprehensive knowledge of a broad range of classical and contemporary sociological theories and a record of publishing high quality theoretical pieces in sociology publications. Competitive candidates will have successfully taught sociological theory previously and the appointee will teach subjects that contribute to the sociology program at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The appointee will also supervise honours, postgraduate coursework, and higher degree theses. The Lecturer in Sociology will also undertake administrative tasks associated with the appointee’s responsibility in teaching and research and foster links with external networks and partners nationally and internationally. The successful applicant will be expected to research, teach and administer at levels commensurate with the level of the position. The person appointed will be expected to teach existing subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and to develop new subjects for the Program as appropriate. The incumbent will undertake research resulting in publications with leading publishers in the field, and to apply for externally competitive grants. She/he is expected to foster engagement links with external networks nationally and internationally and will take on administrative tasks associated with the appointment.
