The Centre for Social Impact (CSI) is a national research and education centre dedicated to catalysing social change for a better world. CSI is built on the foundation of three of Australia’s leading universities: UNSW Sydney, The University of Western Australia, and Swinburne University of Technology.


Our research develops and brings together knowledge to understand current social challenges and opportunities; our postgraduate and undergraduate education develops social impact leaders; and we aim to catalyse change by drawing on these foundations and translating knowledge, creating leaders, developing usable resources, and reaching across traditional divides to facilitate collaborations.


CSI National and CSI UNSW is located on the UNSW Sydney campus (Kensington) within the UNSW Business School where the centre is aligned with the strategic priorities of the University and from where it leads interactions with students, alumni, industry, government, professional bodies, and the community. 


CSI UNSW comprises research, education and operations teams, a national marketing & communications team and the national CSI CEO.



About the role

  • Level B: $105,108 – 123,908 plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading
  • Level C: $127,663 – 146,465 plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading
  • 12 month Fixed-term
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

This role brings together: research, knowledge exchange, building industry alliances and measuring outcomes


The Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow will take a lead role in progressing CSI’s role to catalyse change in regard to housing affordability and homelessness. They will manage and undertake applied research and social impact projects in areas of housing and homelessness, including bespoke research, outcomes measurement and evaluations. The person in the role will help to create systems change through cross-sector collaborations and be involved in the exciting Amplify Social Impact initiative and The Constellation Project. They will be responsible for building and maintaining industry relationships and attracting research funding and contracted industry projects. These objectives will help to increase the centre’s reputation for research leadership in social impact by establishing a strong, thriving, high quality research environment.


This position reports to the Director – CSI UNSW Research and has nil reports, but will work within teams and supervise projects.


Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Conducting research of high quality and high impact including attainment of competitive government and industry research funding and publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets.
  • Monitoring and managing changing and/or emerging issues in research projects and provide expert advice and/or solutions in areas of responsibility
  • Contributing to CSI’s research, industry engagement, and social change efforts in the area of housing and homelessness (e.g. Amplify Social Impact and The Constellation Project)
  • Pursue and develop an active research program (research grant applications, research student supervision, publications in relevant Social Science/Business and related journals, presentation to conferences and publications in conference proceedings)
  • Translate academic research for different industry audiences
  • Under direction of the Research Director take a lead role in managing the CSI UNSW Research team (Level C).


About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Hold a PhD or equivalent experience in sociology, social policy or a relevant field with expertise in housing and homelessness research
  • Be experienced in conducting high-level qualitative or quantitative research, and a proven record in the use of a range of data analysis techniques; knowledge of appropriate IT software such as Stata, SPSS, Endnote and NVIVO.
  • Demonstrate excellence in publishing in leading Business or Social Science journals relevant to CSI areas.
  • Have experience and expertise in project management including management of budgets and financial information, data collection and analysis, measure and report outcomes and ability to work to agreed timelines.
  • Have excellent communication and collaboration skills and an ability to work effectively with industry partners
  • Be experienced at effectively leading research projects and managing and developing research teams (Level C)
