The Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto invites applications for a teaching stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in the area of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences. The expected start date is July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.


The Division of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences seeks an exceptional scholar with expertise in the domain of critical approaches to health, as well as excellence in teaching related to public health. Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in social or health science with expertise in public health, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter.


We seek candidates who complement and strengthen our existing strengths. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at both the undergraduate and graduate program levels, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online materials. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.


Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a description of the candidate’s experience in teaching, a statement of their teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi and materials, and strong teaching evaluations.


In their cover letter, applicants are asked to specifically address the following: evidence of scholarship within the domain of health promotion; how their teaching, other professional and disciplinary expertise relates to and expands upon the health promotion curriculum; which existing courses they have experience to teach; and what new courses they would develop if hired.


Candidates need to demonstrate the ability to influence policy and practice through the production of scholarship and the effective translation of knowledge. Evidence of the ability to obtain grant funding is required. Priority will be given to those who demonstrate outstanding potential to make significant contributions to research, teaching, and leadership in social science and health at the local, national, and international levels.


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The mission of the division of Social and Behavioural Sciences is to advance and apply the social and behavioural sciences in the field of public health through the advancement of knowledge on the structures and processes that underlie health and health promotion, illness, premature mortality, injury and disability. We offer a doctoral program in Social and Behavioural Sciences and a professional Master of Public Health in Health Promotion program.
