The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Premodern Jewish Studies at the Assistant level, to commence July 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD in hand by July 1, 2021 in Jewish Studies or a cognate field with a concentration in Rabbinic and/or Medieval Jewish Culture is required, with a promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and specialize in one or more of the following areas: history, literature, religion, and/or thought of the Rabbinic and/or Medieval periods. The successful candidate will teach in the Department of Humanities and offer courses for the Undergraduate Program in Jewish Studies as well as the Program in Religious Studies. In addition to courses in the candidates area of specialization (e.g., Rabbinic Judaism; Church, Mosque, and Synagogue), the candidate is expected to be able to teach broad introductory courses in Jewish Studies (e.g., The Jewish Experience; Torah and Tradition) and to develop new humanities courses exhibiting interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives. Knowledge of Hebrew is expected.

Additionally, the successful candidate will become an active and engaged member of the Israel and Golda Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies, one of York Universitys Organized Research Units (ORUs).

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) in significant journals in the field, edited volumes, and/or monographs; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.

Evidence of evidence of excellence in teaching or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
