Position Description

The School of Global Public Health (GPH) at New York University is seeking applications for Assistant Professor, a tenure-track position within the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. GPH seeks candidates of exceptional potential and emerging scholarship who can contribute to the academic and research enterprise in NYC and throughout New York University’s key Global Network University (GNU) campuses and study-away sites (3 portal campuses and 12 global academic centers in Africa, South America, North America, China, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East).  The unique GNU arrangement allows GPH faculty to establish training and degree programs and research efforts worldwide; offers faculty and students truly unique opportunities to engage in their research and study around the world and informs public health practice both locally and globally through the exchange of knowledge.

GPH offers academic degrees at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. The undergraduate program includes 13 joint majors where students study public health with other relevant subjects. The CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health degree allows students to obtain an MPH in one of nine concentrations, and the PhD in Public Health is offered in one of four areas of study – Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Public Health Policy & Management.  In addition, a new school-wide, interdisciplinary DrPH degree will launch in September 2021.

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences includes domains such as the social, economic, and cultural determinants of health and health behaviors; health promotion and disease prevention; health disparities and population-level trends; aging and the life course; chronic and infectious diseases; immigration; reproductive health; access to care; and urban health. The successful candidate will also be appointed to a leading research position within the NYU Center for Public Health Disaster Science, formerly known as the research program on  Population Impact, Recovery, and Resilience (PiR2).  The center conducts a variety of disaster research studies on the public health impacts of natural, man-made, biological, and technological hazards; on the long-term recovery of disaster-exposed populations; on the relationship of formal and informal systems involved in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery; on life-course impacts of disasters and acute collective stressors; and on risk-communication studies, among others.  Particular areas of current interest for the Center include studies of disasters and the aging process, the role of housing in buffering disaster effects, and climate change mitigation and adaptation as a public health strategy.

The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, including teaching, service, and research.  The candidate will be expected to teach departmental courses, including qualitative and mixed methods courses, disaster and health courses, and core SBS courses; serve on committees and mentor students, and build an independent research career.  The successful candidate will also contribute to the Center for Public Health Disaster Science's research agenda and mentor students interested in disaster science or who are enrolled in the Advanced Certificate for Public Health Disaster Science, Practice, and Policy.  

The successful candidate for this position will participate in both the Department and the Center. As such, the candidate is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding of social determinants of health; expertise in disaster research; methodological strength in mixed-methods research and observational cohort studies; disciplinary depth in social science such as sociology, anthropology, or political science; a passion for and strength in teaching; and a strong interest in developing an active, externally-funded research portfolio.

●      Providing apprenticeships and internships for pre-college students

●      Participating in prison education or other adult education programs that serve under-resourced populations

●      Developing educational programming thru the media or social media

●      Bringing results of research back to local or international communities

●      Participating as a ‘public intellectual’ on timely issues

●      Engaging in community activities around education, social justice, equity, and inclusion.

This position is contingent on budgetary approval.


The candidate must meet the following requirements: (1) doctoral degree or equivalent in one of the following areas:  demography, economics, epidemiology, political science, public health, psychology, sociology, or related health or social science field; (2) strong and emerging record of scholarly achievement; and (3) experience in public health disaster research.
