"Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
Percent time: 50%, Part Time
Anticipated start: January 1, 2024
Position duration: With an anticipated start date of 1/1/24, the initial appointment would be for a 1.5-year duration (1/1/24 - 6/30/25). The appointment may be renewable based on the department’s needs, funding, and on the incumbent’s performance.

Position description

The University of California at Berkeley seeks applications for a (50%) part-time appointment at the level of Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of History.

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate strong teaching and research interests in comparative approaches to modern Armenian History. The successful appointee will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, will mentor and supervise our graduate and undergraduate students, and will be a conscientious community member of the department, participating in departmental events. The appointee will also be expected to maintain an active program of research and publication and show promise of superior intellectual achievement in both teaching and research. New PhDs are encouraged to apply.

The position is defined as modern Armenian history. We welcome applications from candidates in all subfields of modern Armenian history (political, economic, environmental, cultural, intellectual, social, diplomatic, transnational, the history of gender and sexuality, the history of borderlands, migration, and diaspora etc.). Teaching duties consist of two courses per year, including a lecture survey in Armenian history, ancient to modern. They will also include advising undergraduate and graduate students in Armenian studies, broadly defined.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Completion of the Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred qualifications
  • Native or near-native competence in English and Armenian.

  • Expertise in Armenian History in a comparative context.

  • Strong ability for successful teaching and student advising.

  • Demonstrated record of research and scholarly publications commensurate with career stage.

  • Potential for successfully attracting and mentoring new students.

  • Potential for designing new courses.
