DESCRIPTION

The Critical Gender Studies Program and the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, San Diego invite applications for a tenure track assistant professor of Latinx Feminist Gender and Sexuality Studies, beginning fall 2019. We seek an interdisciplinary scholar working in any historical period, whose research critically engages the lived realities of race, gender, and sexuality in regional, global, and or transnational contexts.

Minimum qualifications for the position include: a PhD in a relevant field in the arts, humanities, or social sciences by start of instruction; a robust research agenda; and a demonstrated commitment to building equitable, diverse classroom and research environments. We particularly welcome applicants whose work engages with environmental justice, policing and carceral studies, immigration studies, performance studies, trans* studies, urban studies, or public health.

The position's teaching responsibilities will be divided evenly between Critical Gender Studies and Ethnic Studies. Rigorously interdisciplinary, intersectional, and transnational in its approach, UCSD’s Critical Gender Studies program gives undergraduate and graduate students a creative and challenging education in gender and sexuality as necessarily linked to race, class, ethnicity, religion, and other social formations. We are committed to cross-disciplinary collaboration in pedagogy and research. Our faculty includes scholars with appointments in the arts and humanities, social sciences, engineering, health sciences, and biological sciences; our students learn to think in creative and productive ways, gaining analytic strengths and conceptual agility by frequently crossing the boundaries of established disciplines. As a small, enthusiastic program, we attract dedicated students and faculty who share a commitment to social equality, innovative scholarship and critical thinking.

Situated in a region where the US-Mexico border zone, indigenous national and tribal governments, and the Asia-Pacific interact to produce a dynamic geopolitical location, UCSD's Ethnic Studies Department is a vibrant community of scholars committed to the interdisciplinary study of race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, sexuality, class, and dis/ability. The department's innovative approach represents a commitment to transnational, relational, and intersectional methods for producing critical knowledge about power and inequality, including systems of knowledge that have emerged from racialized and indigenous communities in global contexts. Ethnic Studies is devoted to creative, conceptual, and empirical research; critical pedagogy; collaborations with a broad group of affiliated faculty; and social justice projects developed with and for the university, our home communities, and the broader public. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

The deadline to apply is November 26, 2018. Applications are accepted electronically at:
