Subject area

Social work

Subject area description

Social work involves studies of the living conditions and experiences of socially vulnerable people. Central to the subject area of social work is thus studying the causes and consequences of social problems as they can be understood at the individual, group and societal level. It is also important to study how various interventions that have the aim of preventing or remedying social problems are designed. Social work is a main subject area at first-, second- and third-cycle levels.

Duties

The position involves research and teaching in social work. Half of the position’s duties consist of teaching within the Bachelor of Science in Social Work but may also include teaching within Master’s programmes, freestanding courses, the psychotherapy programme and contract education. Duties also include being responsible for course administration, collaborating within and between courses, and being active in development work as well as in research in social work. Research comprises 50 per cent of the position. It also includes applying for external funding for research from national and international donors.

The purpose of the position as associate senior lecturer is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop their teaching and research expertise. Teaching at the Department of Social work is campus-focused and we expect that employees are present to a large extent on campus in order to thereby contribute to a stimulating academic environment.

Eligibility criteria

A person who has been awarded a Degree of Doctor in social work no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period, has completed courses in teaching and learning in higher education or equivalent, and who has demonstrated teaching expertise is qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer.

Eligibility for appointment as teaching staff is specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 and in the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.

Applicant assessment criteria

Particular emphasis will be placed on research and teaching expertise in equal measure when filling the position.

In assessing research expertise, particular attention will be paid to documented research expertise, shown through publications in journals with international peer-review systems or alternatively in peer-reviewed book chapters in anthologies published by recognised publishers. In assessing teaching expertise, particular attention will be paid to documented experience in planning and performing teaching. Supervision at first-, second- and third-cycle levels will be considered a plus. The applicant’s research and teaching qualifications and achievements will be assessed in primarily qualitative terms. Consequently, the number of scholarly publications or a long track record in teaching due to the applicant having been active for an extended period of time will not be decisive.

Documented expertise within one of the research areas housing and homelessness, social assistance, addiction, exercise of public authority or welfare policy will be considered a plus. Documented experience of professional social work is considered a plus. In addition, importance will be attached to documented experience of participating in and/or obtaining external funding for research projects as well as having participated in the University’s third task in various ways (collaboration with the surrounding society).

The applicant’s personal qualities concerning their ability to collaborate internally and externally in order to carry out the described duties of the position will be taken into account in the assessment of their suitability for the position.

The successful candidate will be the candidate who is assessed to have the best prospects for carrying out the duties required in the teaching position, collaborating with other staff, and contributing positively to the development of the University based on an overall assessment of their expertise and development potential.

An associate senior lecturer may apply for promotion to senior lecturer.  If the associate senior lecturer is deemed to be suitable and fulfils the requirements for promotion, they are to be promoted and permanently employed as a senior lecturer. During the term of their employment as associate senior lecturer, the successful applicant is expected to achieve in research and teaching and learning at least the qualifications required for appointment as a docent for example.

Assessment criteria for appointment as a lecturer are specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 and in the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.
