POSITION SUMMARY

The Department Chair is a supervisory, faculty/administrative that ensures the integrity, excellence and continuous improvement of the department's educational programs through strategic planning, curriculum oversight, and faculty development. The Department Chair makes data driven decisions to monitor, coordinate, and facilitate program development processes. The Department Chair helps establish operational objectives, have in-depth knowledge of the organization's goals, and positively impacts the health of the institution. The Department Chair also maintains part-time teaching responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Supervise and leads the departmental planning process through faculty engagement.
  • Fulfills faculty responsibilities related to assigned teaching load.
  • Consults on changes and assigns faculty to annual class schedule.
  • Conducts teaching observations of all full-time faculty.
  • Performs evaluations for full-time faculty.
  • Evaluates and recommends tiered pay advancement for adjunct faculty (semi-annual cycle)
  • Resolves instructional complaints from students.
  • Holds regular departmental meetings and maintains open communication with faculty.
  • Refers faculty compliance with college policies and processes to the Dean after the first attempt to gain compliance.
  • Ensures maintenance of accurate department records.
  • Facilitates performance management in timely manner.
  • Reviews and recommends special course fee changes on semi-annual basis.
  • Supervises recruitment and hiring processes for departmental faculty and staff.
  • Reviews and approves/denies exceptions to academic requirements.
  • Prepares and manages department operating budgets.
  • Conveys by words and action the values expected by CWI.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within a balanced workload.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in related discipline, History or Political Science preferred.
  • Five years of demonstrated teaching excellence inhistory or political science at the post-secondary level.
  • Two years of leadership or supervisory experience. Leadership and supervisory experience in a post-secondary institution preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership behaviors that result in making good decisions aligned with the College's priorities. Encourage team members to perform their duties to achieve priorities. Must possess qualities to inspire team by; creating transparency in the decision-making process when possible achieving accountability for decisions; inspiring team members to meet and exceed goals and objectives; identifying the strengths and development areas of each team member and inspire them to do their best work in an effective manner.
  • Experience in curriculum design, implementation, and oversight.
  • Significant knowledge of or experience in a community college setting preferred.
  • Experience developing and monitoring budgets preferred.
  • Management of a learning lab preferred.
  • Experience in problem-based learning, teaching with an array of distance learning technologies, teaching in blended learning formats and online teaching preferred.
  • Willingness to pursue scholarly activity preferred.

Salary RangeĀ 

$45,600 - $54,720 per year
