Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of linguistic pragmatics / sociolinguistics

The candidate will be affiliated with the Grammar and Pragmatics research group and will carry out an empirical research project on corporate (multilingual) language use as manifested in both official policy and everyday interaction. The project entails linguistic ethnographic fieldwork in a professional, corporate context during which both spoken interactional data and survey results will be gathered. The aim of the project is to learn more about the pragmatics of both language choices and meaning negotiation in cross-cultural high-stakes encounters in a multilingual corporate context in Belgium.

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of linguistic pragmatics / sociolinguistics.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Linguistics (Faculty of Arts).

Profile and requirements

  • You hold an MA in Linguistics, Anthropology or Interpreting/Translation (or related fields).
  • You have an excellent command of Dutch and English. Competence in additional languages are an asset.
  • You have demonstrable interest in studying language in interaction (especially in a corporate setting) and have experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • You can submit outstanding academic results.
  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, renewable for another two-year period after positive evaluation;
  • the start date of the scholarship is 1 February 2020;
  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.373,36 to € 2.516,73;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
