The Opportunity

The Faculty of Law at Ryerson Universityinvites applications for one (1) Open Rank position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level.  The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2021, subject to final budgetary approval.

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, Ryerson University is on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples. Ryerson is known for its culture of entrepreneurship and innovation and is recognized as a city builder, as it continues its growth through award-winning architecture and expansion of its campus. Our undergraduate and programs are distinguished by a professionally focused curriculum with a strong emphasis on excellence in teaching, scholarly research and creative activities. The Faculty of Law is contributing to this growth as it opened its doors for the first time in September 2020, offering a Juris Doctor program.

We are interested in candidates who will contribute to our Faculty’s emerging research and teaching strengths primarily in the area of Law and Technology. Candidates with a strong research record in other areas are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will also bring innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences aligned with our Juris Doctor program’s Four Pillars:

The Faculty aims to build an outstanding reputation for scholarly work and an innovative teaching culture. In the spring of 2019, the Law Society of Ontario approved the Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC) designation for the program, given its thorough going emphasis on the skills of legal practice. 

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA) ().

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties, maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Responsibilities include: contributing to our Juris Doctor program through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students; participating in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, community-engaged research agenda, including pursuing innovative, independent research that produces cutting-edge high quality results; and participating in the academic life of the Faculty and the University.


Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor or LLB degree as well as either an LL.M. or a Master’s degree in a closely related field. Preference will be given to those with either a doctoral degree in Law, a PhD in a closely related field, or who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion. In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:

  • strong emerging scholarly research that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;
  • experience with or capacity for high-quality teaching and student engagement via a teaching dossier that outlines their teaching philosophy and teaching accomplishments, including experience with course/curriculum review/development, excellent pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations; 
  • strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise students;
  • commitment to Ryerson’s values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as they pertain to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and 
  • an ability to contribute to the life of the Faculty and the University through collegial service. With the Faculty’s rapid growth in years to come, contributions to service and administration are valued and thus we look for candidates with the interest and capacity to contribute in this manner.
