The Faculty of Arts is seeking to fill the following full time vacancy in the Department of Philosophy:

Job description

The assignment has a structural character in the three core activities of the tenured academic staff.

  • You will be assigned following lecturing duties Introduction to Philosophy (Ba1 SW, sem 2, 3SP), Academic and Philosophical Basic skills (Ba1 Philos., 6 SP, sem 1+sem 2), Research seminar Aesthetics (Ba3 Philos., sem 2, 6 SP), Philosophy of Music (bi-annual, Ba2 and Ba3, sem 1, 6 SP), Philosophy and Society (Ma, sem 2, 6 SP, for the academic year 2020-2021).
  • You will expand the scientific research in the area of contemporary philosophy of culture in line with the research tradition of the Centre for European Philosophy.
  • You will acquire and manage external funding (national and international).
  • You will offer scientific services: among others you take part in supporting the partnerships of ARIA and the higher education institutions in the fine arts. Moreover, you will contribute to bringing philosophy to a wider audience/readership with a focus on the cultural sector.
  • You are willing to take initiative and to organize the annual meeting and other events of the Centre for European Philosophy.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in Philosophy.
  • You have several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • As a course unit coordinator, you are able to demonstrate that you master the language of instruction at the CEFR level C1 before the beginning of the module(s). As a course unit coordinator, you also master the language of administration, Dutch, or you are willing to gradually learn the language up to the CEFR level B2. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members by offering them an integration programme and provides adequate language tracks for course unit coordinators within the framework of the Flemish statutory language regulations.
  • You have the didactic qualities to teach an introductory course of philosophy to a large group of non-philosophy students at the start of your appointment.

We offer

  • either a part-time position with a structural assignment as a lecturer, in a temporary appointment in the tenure track for a term of five years. This position will lead to an immediate permanent appointment as a senior lecturer if the performance is assessed favourably on the basis of previously fixed and publicly announced evaluation criteria;
  • or a part-time position with a structural assignment as a senior lecturer or higher, generally entailing a permanent appointment. In the case of a first appointment to the corps of academic personnel (ZAP), the university board may proceed to a temporary appointment for a period not exceeding three years. This position will lead to a permanent appointment if the performance is assessed favourably;
  • the date of appointment will be 15 September 2020;
  • a full time gross monthly salary ranging for a lecturer from € 4.255,06 - € 6.272,13, and for a senior lecturer from € 4.872,61 - € 7.654,80;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
