The Center is recruiting for an open rank faculty position The Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies is one of the nation’s leading tobacco focused research centers and has received approximately $50 million in extramural funding over the past two decades. With a team of 10 full-time faculty and 15 skilled research and support staff, the Center’s efforts are focused on their mission of reducing and ultimately eliminating, tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. Housed within CTS, the Rutgers Tobacco Dependence Program has treated thousands of patients for tobacco dependence in our specialty tobacco treatment program and trained thousands of healthcare professionals utilizing evidence-based treatment interventions over the past 20 years. Our treatment program is jointly supported by the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Our Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program is one of a few such programs nationally accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP).

This exciting position is responsible for directing the Center’s behaviorally-related, tobacco treatment research, as well as helping to lead the Center’s ongoing health professional educational/training activities, such as the Rutgers Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist continuing education programs. Under the direction of the Medical Director, the faculty member will also be active providing high-quality patient care including clinical assessment, individual and group treatment, and telephone/telehealth consultation for patients seeking care for tobacco dependence. Tobacco treatment services are based on evidence-based US Public Health Services Clinical Practice Guidelines and other scientific evidence. These services are offered in our Clinical Outpatient setting, as well as at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of NJ, New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Tobacco treatment is also delivered for our hospitalized patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, part of the RWJ/Barnabas Health System, New Jersey’s largest Health System.

The successful applicant(s) for this recruitment will hold a joint appointment at the Center and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the Department of Medicine.

Minimum Education and Experience

A doctoral or equivalent degree in psychology, social work, or other behavioral health discipline is required. 

Candidates with degrees in medicine, nursing or other clinical fields who also have tobacco treatment experience are encouraged to apply.


Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist/National Certified Tobacco Treatment Provider designation is highly preferred, as is clinical licensure.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

We are seeking candidates with exceptional communication skills and a demonstrated track record in information dissemination to broad and diverse audiences through publications, presentations, and/or webinars.
