Lecturer in Law - Externships

Law School Faculty Los Angeles, California

The Gould School of Law seeks to hire part-time lecturers for the Externship Program for the Summer 2020 term. The primary responsibility of each instructor will be to supervise the academic work related to the student externship program. Instructors will be compensated for teaching a one-credit course.

The goal of the course is to support students’ development of their legal and professional skills over the course of their externships. Instructors will work with students as they evaluate their skills, set their learning goals, work to integrate their doctrinal knowledge with the reality of the practice of law, master challenging skills and begin to develop their professional identities. Instructors’ responsibilities will include reviewing and commenting on student work (essays and time reports), counseling students by email and phone as needed, creating, monitoring and responding to submissions to one time-limited online forum, and contacting students’ supervisors as appropriate. Because summer externs often work in placements outside of the Los Angeles area, much of the communication with students will be via email.

Candidates must be attorneys with a J.D. degree who have five years of experience in one or more of the practice areas below, and must reside in the Los Angeles area. Attorneys with experience in supervising law student externs or teaching in a law school setting will be given special consideration. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to fostering the growth and development of law students and new attorneys.

Candidates with practice experience in federal, state or local government, the non-profit sector or in a corporate general counsel’s office are encouraged to apply. Attorneys with extensive practice experience in a law firm setting may also be considered if they have three or more years of experience in one of the practice settings just listed and have done substantial training and supervision of law students and new attorneys. Candidates who have completed a federal clerkship of at least one year in length, or who have served as a research attorney in a state appellate court for two or more years, may count those years toward the minimum required experience.

Equity, diversity, inclusion, opportunity and access are of central importance to the Gould School of Law (Gould).  Gould holds a unique position in society, and within the university, as every aspect of these principles are influenced by and can be protected through legal rules and institutions.  At Gould, we are proudly committed to maintaining a community in which each person respects the rights of others to live, work, and learn in peace and dignity, to be proud of who and what they are, and to have equal opportunity to realize their full potential as individuals and members of society.
