The Opportunity

The School of Social Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia seeks applications for a continuing appointment as Lecturer in Sociology. The School of Social Sciences is recognised internationally for its quality education, innovative research and international engagement.

Monash has six globally networked campuses and international alliances in Europe and Asia. The appointment will be based at the Clayton campus in Melbourne. Sociology at Monash is one of the oldest, largest, and most dynamic Sociology programs in Australia. We have been researching and teaching Sociology for over 50 years and are currently ranked 6th nationally, and 59th in the world (QS 2018/19). Our academics are research leaders in gender, health, diversity, digital culture, youth, migration, and environmental sociology. We have a strong research culture in our discipline and school which supports consistent competitive grant winning and quality, highly cited publications. We teach close to 4,000 undergraduates yearly in units that are closely aligned with our research strengths. Sociology staff consistently deliver excellence in teaching and graduate research: we currently supervise over 40 PhD students.


Applicants demonstrating potential and achievement in core fields of research and teaching in Sociology will be seriously considered. Strong quantitative and qualitative skills are desired. Preference will be given to those with expertise in the sociology of gender, new and emerging technologies, and digital media. Benefits of this position includes:
