Job description

The Department of Sociology is looking for a Junior Lecturer in Sociology. This position involves 90% teaching activities and 10% training and development activities.

The Department of Sociology provides teaching in our Bachelor’s programme Sociology, the one-year Master’s programme (Sociology: Contemporary Social Problems and the two-year Master’s programme (Sociology and Social Research). The department has strong research traditions in a wide range of topics in sociology including cooperation problems, social networks, stratification and inequality, households, and immigration. It is part of the Dutch research school Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS).

Core task of the Junior Lecturer will be to contribute to teaching on different topics and curricula (mainly in the Bachelor’s and the one-year Master’s programme). Teaching working groups in “Inleiding Sociologie” is one of the most likely tasks in this position. The candidate will also be one of the tutors of the Bachelor's students and will cooperate in matching and study information activities.


We are looking for a Junior Teacher who likes to supervise working groups and wants to develop in the field of education, but who also has organisational qualities and can contribute to the development of education. This mainly concerns Dutch-language and possibly English-language Bachelor's education.


  • holds a Master’s degree or a PhD degree in Sociology or a closely related field;
  • preferably has some experience in teaching in higher education;
  • is knowledgeable about one or more of the topics that are taught within the Sociology Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes;
  • holds a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or is willing to acquire this qualification in the near future;
  • is able to co-develop and coordinate academic courses;
  • fluency in Dutch and qualified to teach in English (part of the curriculum is in English);
  • is a team player.


We offer a temporary position (0.7 - 0.8 FTE) for four years. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €2,790 and €4,402 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. We are looking for a colleague to join our team for the academic year 2020-2021. We aim to be able to fill the position by August 2020. Due to the start of education in September the new teacher should be available from the beginning of August. Interviews will be held online on July 10.
