The School of Social Science is located in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science. It is one of the leading social science schools in Australia. The School teaches in the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, criminology and sociology, as well as in interdisciplinary degree programs in criminology and criminal justice, development practice, museum studies, social science and cyber-security. About This Opportunity

An opportunity exists for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to conduct research relating to the ethical automated decision making in social services. The research will contribute to the Centre for Excellence (CoE) for Automated Decision Making and Society (ADM+S) in general, and the UQ Node more specifically. The fellow will contribute to the Machines program, through two projects:

  • Mapping ADM machines in Australia and the Asia-Pacific; and
  • Building Ethical Machines in Social Services: Examining, Evaluating, Building Fairness and Explainability in ADM.

Areas of social services can include child protection, income support, criminal justice or disability services.

The ARC CoE for ADM+S https://www.admscentre.org.au/ is located across nine Australian universities and led by 18 internationally renowned Chief Investigators, in partnership with international universities and industry partners. As Postdoctoral Fellow you will be part of and contribute to of this transdisciplinary network, and be located UQ Node, based in the School of Social Science, which is led by Professor Paul Henman.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful, you must have a PhD in a relevant discipline relating to the UQ Node’s work, including social sciences (science and technology studies (STS), policy studies, sociology, political science, public administration), law, humanities (media and communication studies, ethics) or computer science. In addition the candidate will have an emerging research track record of high quality publications; a demonstrated interest in automated decision making and society; and an ability to work collaboratively within a team, while maintaining an individual role within a research area.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 3 years at Academic Level A, which will need to begin prior to 30 June 2021.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $69,342 - $92,782, (2020 rates) plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $81,131 - $108,555.
