Job summary

The Department of Management & Entrepreneurship wishes to retain and improve its position as a world-leading research and teaching centre in innovation and now seeks to appoint a Principal Teaching Fellow (part-time) with outstanding expertise in innovation for social impact, sustainability, and technological change.  The post holder will be expected to support and develop teaching in the Business School both through degree programmes and executive education. 

Teaching Fellows contribute primarily to the design and delivery of educational modules, the direction of programmes and the development of innovative approaches to life-long learning. They have the capacity to teach their subjects to non-specialists as well as specialists at the postgraduate level, including executive education.  The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the School, to participate in the internal life of the School, and to enhance its reputation for pedagogy.

The role will support the Business School’s goal to nurture students’ future skills, both analytical & soft skills and offering an experiential and innovative learning experience emphasizing leadership as well as societal and stakeholder impact.

We are therefore seeking to appoint an expert instructor with demonstrated capacity for innovative design, and excellent delivery of modules on the essential topics of social innovation, business analytics for NGOs and the not-for-profit sector, and technology / innovation for social impact (Platforms, AI, and Blockchain).

Duties and responsibilities

    • To teach as a member of a teaching team within an established programme of study, related to the required topics
    • To give lectures related to the required topics
    • To develop and review teaching materials used together with the associated teaching methods and activities
    • To identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement
    • To contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and curricula
    • To develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches
    • To use appropriate teaching, learning support, and assessment methods
    • To adopt teaching, learning support and assessment methods appropriate to online delivery
    • To identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement
    • To contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and curricula
    • To be module/course/programme organiser as appropriate
    • To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems
    • To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, field trips and placements
    • To assess the work and progress of students using appropriate criteria and provide constructive feedback to students, including feedback on essays and course assessments

    • To mark examinations, course work and process marks
    • To coordinate with internal or visiting lecturers
    • To act as Admissions tutor/Senior tutor
    • To assist in the admissions process
    • To act as academic tutor and run academic tutorials
    • To act as a personal tutor or be responsible for the pastoral care of students within a specified area
    • To take responsibility for development of new initiatives in teaching
    • To reflect on teaching practice and delivery and the development of personal teaching and learning skills generally
    • To remain professional in practice and maintain knowledge in own specialist area.

Essential requirements

    • A PhD in relevant area (e.g. Engineering, Management, Statistics)
    • Courses related to social innovation, business analytics for NGOs and not-for-profit sector, and technology / innovation for social impact
    • Relevant and significant experience of curriculum development in a research, higher education or policy environment
    • Experience of managing a wide portfolio of activities, projects and programmes in an academic environment
    • Experience with working with senior academics and contributing at a senior level
    • Experience of managing operational aspects of Master’s and Bachelor’s degree programmes as well as executive education programmes
    • Proven communication and interpersonal skills—confident in forming effective working relationships with a broad range of people
    • Specialist knowledge in the relevant discipline and of teaching methods and techniques within the topics of social innovation, business analytics for NGOs and not-for-profit sector, and technology / innovation for social impact
    • Knowledge of the wider work practices, procedures and processes involved in developing new degree programmes
    • Understanding of the major issues which affect universities and the needs of the academic environment
    • Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop teaching programmes and the provision of learning support
    • Familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess teaching, including approaches to encourage classroom participation
    • Expertise in the design and successful delivery of online courses in the required topics, both in synchronous and asynchronous modes
    • Excellent time management and organisational skills—confident about working within multiple projects and work streams simultaneously
    • Innovative and resourceful—adept at problem solving and independent decision making
    • Ability to assess priorities, organise workloads without supervision and initiate action and resolve problems where appropriate
    • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion
    • Excellent communicator—highly developed verbal and written communication skills. Be tactful, diplomatic and able to influence and engage with people at all levels of seniority
    • Promotes and fosters team working—able to work flexibly with other members of a project team that may include a mix of academics from different Faculties.

Further information

This is for a three-year fixed term contract with the potential for renewal. It is part-time, at approximately 50% of the full time equivalent, which may be increased or decreased according to the needs of the successful applicant.
