Professor of Political Science Specializing in Comparative Politics

Lunds universitet, Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the leading education and research institutions in Sweden and operates both in Lund and Helsingborg.

The Department of Political Science combines ancient traditions with modern research and education. The department safeguards disciplinary breadth and diversity and has long been successful in competition for external research funding. Key research fields include democracy and democratisation, power and administration, diplomacy, peace and conflict, globalisation, political psychology, gender, environmental policy and welfare. The strong research profile of the Department of Political Science is reflected in its teaching. The educational environment has long been strongly international.

Work duties

A professor has an overarching responsibility for research and education within the relevant subject area and is expected to contribute to the continuous development of the subject, internally as well as nationally and internationally. The work duties consist of independent research, teaching and supervision in the first, second and third cycles, as well as leadership in research and education. A professor is expected to take part in and lead major research projects, including applying for external research funding, and is to actively participate in the everyday work of the department. The assignment also includes administrative duties linked to the work duties above. In addition, a professor has particular responsibility for representing the subject area, both within the discipline and in relation to wider society.

Requirements and qualifications

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 3). Research expertise is to be demonstrated through independent research contributions which to a significant degree, both qualitatively and quantitatively, exceed the requirements for an associate professorship. Expertise is proven through current international research publications of high quality within the subject area and through documented experience of leading research and developing the discipline. A proven ability to obtain research grants in competition is a requirement.

Teaching expertise is proven through documented and discussed teaching experience in the first, second and third cycles of study. The position requires the applicant to have supervised at least one research student to a doctoral degree, as principal supervisor or supervisor. The applicant is also required to have undergone at least five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education, or to have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, unless special circumstances apply; applicants who lack formal training in teaching and learning in higher education are to undergo such training within one year of taking up the position. Teaching staff at Lund University are required to be suitable for the position and to have the general ability to fulfil their work duties well.

As teaching may be done in both Swedish and English, non-Swedish-speaking applicants will be expected gradually to acquire knowledge of Swedish at a level sufficient to perform commonly occurring work duties in education and administration. Opportunities to benefit from Swedish language teaching at Lund University are available.

Assessment criteria

General assessment criteria are the degree of expertise in research, teaching, administration and other areas of significance with reference to the disciplinary content and work duties of the position, and other personal abilities of significance for successfully carrying out these duties. The same attention will be paid to the applicant’s expertise in research and teaching.

The assessment of research expertise will particularly emphasise the applicant’s ability to independently develop and implement research of high quality in the subject field, expressed among other things through a) publication in well-regarded international journals and/or by renowned publishing houses, taking into account the publishing traditions of the discipline; b) the ability to obtain research grants as a principal investigator in competition; c) the ability to initiate, plan and lead research activities in collegial collaboration and to contribute to the development of strong research environments; and d) the ability to establish national and international research collaborations and to contribute to the research community, both within the applicant’s own discipline and in a broader context. The quality of the research activity is at the forefront, but also its scope, with regard to breadth and depth, is significant to the assessment. Methodological breadth is an additional qualification.

In the assessment of teaching expertise, particular emphasis is placed on the applicant’s ability to develop, plan and implement education of high quality within the discipline, expressed among other things through documented and discussed experience of teaching in the first, second and third cycles of study, and to contribute to the development of educational environments through collegial collaboration. The ability to supervise research students to a doctoral degree is given great importance, as well as the ability to link teaching on various levels to research. The quality of teaching activities is at the forefront, but its scope, with regard to breadth and depth, is also important.

Furthermore, the applicant’s administrative ability and ability for communication are significant, as is the applicant’s ability to represent the discipline, collaborate with wider society and inform the general public about their activities. Experience of leadership responsibilities and documented responsibility for development and renewal work at the departmental, faculty and university levels or equivalent are additional qualifications. The Department of Political Science has a collegial approach to work. A good ability to collaborate with others and willingness to work together in teams are highly valued.
