We are now recruiting a  Research Assistant to support Stephen Farrall’s research funded by the Canadian Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council.  The project will explore how different criminal justice systems and community partners have been able to assist former-prisoners during the COVID19 pandemic, where a wide-spread shift to the ‘remote delivery’ of personal services was initiated. The research will examine many challenges faced by former-prisoners and how these can be addressed in order to assist them in the new ‘virtual’ and the real world.

Strong theoretical, empirical research and writing skills are essential. Successful applicants may have experience or an interest in the following areas:

  • An understanding of literature and explanations relating to the COVID19 Pandemic, especially as it relates to the criminal justice system
  • Research experience within criminal justice settings (including, but not limited to ONE of the following: prisons, 3rd sector bodies, community disposals)
  • An understanding of the processes of resettlement into the community following imprisonment
  • Qualitative 1-1 interviewing experience.

In addition to the above skills, the applicant should be able to work as part of a team, but also to work unsupervised where necessary. The role will involve literature searching as well as maintaining connections with partners outside the University (such as local faith group and colleagues working in Canada and Finland), summarising findings, and contributing where necessary to the final report.

We actively encourage people from Black, Asian, the LGBQT+ communities and minority ethnic backgrounds to apply as the School is determined to provide a diverse and inclusive environment for staff and students which draws on the widest possible range of talents and backgrounds.?

Former lived-experience applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. If offered the position, you will be subject to our usual pre-employment checks.

This is a fixed term post from 1st November 2023 to 31st October 2024. The post is available as ONE full time post (36.25 hours per week), or TWO part-time posts (18.12 hours per week).

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Stephen Farrall
