The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) was established at the University of New South Wales by the Australian Government in 1986 to extend the knowledge base required for effective treatment of individuals with alcohol and other drug related problems and to enhance the overall research capacity in the drug and alcohol field. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre is supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Health under the Drug and Alcohol Program. The Centre is highly regarded, both nationally and internationally, for its contribution to drug and alcohol research

The Opportunity  

  • Fixed-term opportunity until 30 June 2022
  • Academic Level C: $131K - $150K (+ 17% superannuation & leave loading)
  • Sydney, Australia based.

The Senior Research Fellow will contribute to, and/or take a leading role in the conduct of high quality epidemiological/pharmacoepidemiological research, that may include data linkage studies. This research will be in one or more of NDARC’s workplan areas.

The role of Senior Research Fellow reports to the Director and is expected to develop a number of direct reports (e.g. more junior academic staff, HDRs).

Skills and Experience

  • Postgraduate degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, applied public health or a related discipline
  • Strong understanding of theory and methods relating to the design of epidemiological/ pharmacoepidemiological studies and the statistical analysis of health-related data
  • Demonstrated experience in the management and analysis of large complex administrative health datasets, including linked, longitudinal data with highly developed data analysis skills
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality when dealing with sensitive data and an understanding of ethical principles relating to privacy and confidentiality
  • Established track record in leading data linkage or epidemiological/pharmacoepidemiological research projects
  • Extensive track record of high-quality research outputs, including first or senior author peer reviewed publications
  • Proven track record of obtaining competitive research grant and fellowship funding from a range of funding bodies
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualise novel research questions in areas relevant to public health and health services research, and to develop these into research outputs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to build successful working relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience in supervision of HDRs or Research Assistants
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
