The School of Global Studies (SGS) at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a two-year full-time postdoctoral research fellowship. The position forms part of a research project led by Professor Annica Kronsell on ‘Intersectionality and Climate Policy Making’. The post mainly involves research on this project, but there may be opportunities also to teach (to a maximum 20% of full-time).

The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg

The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg produces top-quality research, teaching, and public engagement on today’s key global challenges. The staff of over 100 faculty and PhD researchers examines global questions and their governance in disciplines and areas such as environmental studies, human ecology, sustainability, international relations, peace and security, and development studies as well as in anthropology, regional studies, cultural heritage, gender, human rights, and migration. The School’s work is highly international, cross-disciplinary, and policy-relevant.

Project Description

Climate issues are salient on the political agenda and governmental institutions are deeply involved in developing policies with significant distributive effects for the future. Proposed strategies tend to focus on technical and economic solutions while research stresses the importance of social inclusion to achieve a climate transition in line with current environmental and sustainability objectives. The project ‘Intersectionality and Climate Policy Making: Ways forward to a socially inclusive and sustainable welfare state’ aims to demonstrate the many ways in which climate change is entangled with intersectional power dynamics – e.g. gender, class, ethnicity, and geographical location – and attempt to remedy the fact that recognition of such factors in climate policy-making have been very limited. The aim of the project is to increase knowledge among climate policy makers about intersectional factors so they may develop socially inclusive and just climate policies in line with Agenda 2030. Drawing on feminist institutionalism and intersectional theory, the project asks: How can the awareness of social differences be increased among Swedish climate policy makers? Why has Swedish climate policy hitherto generally not recognized the importance of including social differences? How might intersectionally-informed climate policies be formulated?

The project is closely aligned with a concurrent four year research programme on Intersectionality and Climate Policy Making which runs 2019-2022 with funding from the Swedish Research Council Formas. The postdoc will thereby be part of a vibrant larger research endeavor including a Professor and PhD student placed in Environmental Social Science at the School of Global Studies, researchers at Malmö university and Linköping university.
