The History-Social Science Project at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a one year, 100% time Academic Coordinator appointment, rank I with a step ranging from 7-10 based on experience, with a start date as early as July 1, 2019.

The Academic Coordinator leads professional development in history for K-12 grade level teachers participating in University of California, Berkeley History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) programming. This is a fiscal year, full-time appointment of 40 hours a week. The Academic Coordinator will work closely with the Director of the UCBHSSP, as well as district and school site administrations and department leadership, to provide professional development for history-social science teachers. We seek applicants with experience in history instruction, curriculum development, and adult learning. We are particularly looking for someone to join our team who has expertise in Ethnic Studies and culturally sustaining pedagogies.

The Academic Coordinator provides support for (a) improving disciplinary-specific instruction, with particular attention paid to planning for historical literacy development; (b) increasing teacher knowledge of the H-SS Framework and other state-wide requirements and recommendations for history instruction; (c) planning models that center culturally relevant instruction in history classrooms. The Academic Coordinator reports to the Director of the University of California, Berkeley History-Social Science Project and will have access to shared work space in the UCBHSSP office, located in the Department of History at UC Berkeley. Regular travel to partner organizations and school sites will be required. Access to a car is needed. This position’s renewal after the initial year is dependent on available funding.

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor degree or equivalent international degree by time of application.

Preferred Qualifications: Five plus years of K-12 teaching experience in history or a related social science field. Experience developing curriculum. Experience leading professional development programs or coursework to improve planning and instruction in history. Knowledge of context of California education, including current H-SS Standards and Framework, Common Core, and ELD Standards. Experience working in high poverty schools and commitment to diversity and equity. Familiarity with the programming offered by the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team setting. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Basic computer skills (MS Office). A California Teaching Credential.

Title and Compensation: Academic Coordinator I. Salary ranging from $59,019 - $89,610.
