The University of Toronto Scarborough invites applications for a teaching-stream appointment in Critical Citizenship and Development at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream. The position will be held jointly in the Centre for Critical Development Studies (CCDS) (49%) and in the Department of Political Science (51%) and will commence on July 1, 2018.


We seek candidates with teaching and research expertise in critical citizenship studies in Global South contexts with interests in the themes of participation, action, and resistance. Candidates should be well versed in democratic pedagogies and have experience translating these into their teaching practice. We are also looking for candidates with expertise in experiential learning practices and who can bring to the CCDS their active participation in global development networks with interests in the nexus between research, pedagogy, and practice.


The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or a closely related field in Political Science by the time of appointment. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching in critical development studies at the university level and to pedagogical enquiry, curriculum development, and teaching innovation. They also must demonstrate an interest in developing a long-term career in teaching and related scholarly activity in critical citizenship and development.


Evidence of excellence in, or a commitment to, teaching will be demonstrated in a teaching portfolio that includes a compelling statement of teaching philosophy and goals, accompanied by a narrative that demonstrates how the candidate’s teaching practice aligns with their philosophy and goals and how they will integrate their research interests in critical citizenship and development with pedagogical practice. Further evidence of teaching excellence can be provided by strong letters of reference; strong student course evaluations; evidence of excellent pedagogical practice; course syllabi with samples of course assignments; and evidence of leadership initiatives in other teaching related activities, including those related to the activities of global research and development networks.
