Postdoctoral in Political Science with a focus on comparative politics and / or international relations

Lund University, Department of Political Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is ranked recurrently as one of the world's 100 leading universities. There are 42,000 students and 7,400 employees in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our quest to understand, explain and improve our world and human condition.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of Sweden's leading knowledge centers for research and education in social sciences and behavioral science and operates in both Lund and Helsingborg.

The Department of Political Science combines ancient ancestors with modern research and education. In recent years, the department has been very successful in the competition for external research funds. Central research areas include democratization, diplomacy, peace and conflict, environmental policy and welfare. The Department of Political Science's strong research profile is reflected in the teaching. The institution's strong research profile is also reflected in our teaching. The education environment has long been highly internationalized.

The tasks cover research (about 90%) and teaching (about 10%).

The service is linked to the research program "State Building and the Global Order of Origin, after and after the 19th Century" (STANCE), led by Jan Teorell and funded by the Riksbank's Jubilee Fund ( The program began in 2015 and ended in 2020. Its overall purpose is to bridge the gaps between international and comparative politics, and between empirical political science and political theory. Three research questions are in focus: (1) During this period, how did the interaction emerge between the emergence of the state's internal and external sovereignty, recovery, professional bureaucracy and infrastructure capacity? What actors and organized interests supported each opposed this process? (2) How was the state's influence of geopolitical competition and warfare and the spread of new political technologies affected? And (3) what were the consequences for the international political system, what kind of state became dominant and who were recognized as members of it?

Each postdoctor is expected to conduct research that contributes to meeting at least one of the overall objectives of the research program. However, all researchers participating in the program conduct independent research, with full freedom to choose research questions, develop theoretical ideas and choose research methods within the program's overall objectives. Because the program mixes different types of methodological approaches, from quantitative methods to individual case studies, text interpretation and archive studies, we expect applicants with a broad methodological background and a sense open to new approaches.

As the project is based on teamwork, all participants in the project are expected to have the Department of Political Science in Lund as their main workplace.
