Project Researcher in the research project INTERGENERATIONAL MARGINALIZATION for a fixed term from 15 March 2018 to 31 December 2019.


The research project “Intergenerational marginalization and non-material contributory and protective factors” is recruiting a Project Researcher. The position will be located at the Unit of Sociology in the Department of Social Research, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Turku. The key areas of research and teaching at the department are welfare research, the study of cultural interaction and social inequality, and comparative research.


The research project focuses on plausible mechanisms behind the intergenerational marginalization from early childhood to young adulthood. Also multiple possible non-material contributory and protective factors related to the intergenerational transmission of social disadvantages are studied. These factors pertain to mental health, substance abuse, family relations, early mother-infant interaction, home leaving age, and early parenthood. The project is funded by Turku Urban Research Programme and runs in the period 2018-2019. 


The position is intended for a researcher who is planning to conduct doctoral studies on a topic related to the project. The tasks include conducting research on the topics specified in the project plan. The person chosen for the position is expected to have a) a Master’s degree in sociology or in a field related to the topic (or close to acquiring such a degree, associated with strong practical research expertise in the field. The position is Research Assistant till the graduation.), and b) previous experience in quantitative data analysis. When assessing the merits of the applicants, special emphasis will be placed on competence and practical expertise in the field in question.


The person chosen for the position is expected to begin working in the project at the middle of March 2018 at the earliest and at the beginning of June 2018 at the latest. The contract is until the end of 2019.


The salary for Project Researcher is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel levels 2 – 4 where the work-specific salary component is between 1.985,85 – 2.475,31 €/month. The salary for Research Assistant is level 1 where the work-specific salary component is 1.808,42 €/month. The component based on personal performance adds a maximum of 46.3% to this salary.


There will be a trial period of 4 months.


The application should include a motivation letter describing the applicant’s own research interests in the field and how they are related to the project, a CV, a research plan for the doctoral thesis and two writing samples. The applicants who are still lacking a Master’s degree must also accompany an assessment of their supervisor about the planned date of the completion of the degree and the quality of the related thesis.
