Doctoral Grant (BOF) in Urban farming University of Antwerp, Faculty of Social Sciences Belgium

Doctoral Grant (BOF), Urban farming

The Departments Marketing (faculty Applied Economics) and Sociology (Faculty of Social Sciences) are seeking to fill a full time (100%) vacancy for a

Doctoral Grant in the area of urban farming

It concerns a doctoral research that focus on sustainable management models for the implementation of urban farming projects. Through urban farming, open spaces, food and natural resources are treated as commons and we hereby investigate innovative collaborations and shared ownership. Apart from shaping social business models and providing guidance for urban agricultural governance, we focus on gaining insights in co-creative processes in which as well citizens, companies and policy makers are involved.

The proposed research consists of a collaboration between the faculties social sciences, applied economics and design sciences. The focus of the study is a co-creative design of an urban agricultural governance whereby open spaces, food and resources are treated as commons. Besides questions that arise concerning social inclusion and participation -which are related to sociological topics- adoption processes by users and other stakeholders are studied, which is typically embedded in the domain of consumer behaviour and therefore leans on insights from the marketing domain (applied economics). To set up an appropriate research design, we borrow some typical research techniques from the field of design sciences, such as tools and action research. Throughout a co-creative research the outside in approach, typical for market research, is applied in an iteration of several field surveys, workshops and concept tests.
