What is the impact of GDPR on Third Sector Organisations?


A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2019/20 Academic Year.

How does the European General Data Protection Regulation coming into force on 25 May 2018 and the ePrivacy Directive impact on third sector organisations’ practices communicating with members and subscribers? The aim of the project is to survey they use of ICT and platforms of third sector organizations and how their practices have changed since GDPR came into force. 1) To what extent do TSOs rely on platforms to communicate with members and carry out their activities? 2) Do members and clients expect to communicate with TSOs via ICT? 3) What consequences does GDPR have for TSOs use of platforms?


Skills Required

A good first degree (social sciences, law), familiarity with the Third Sector and platforms, good understanding of social theory and methods.



South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £14777 (2018/19 UKRI rate), plus payment of all programme fees. Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students). Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at
