The Department of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge seeks to appoint a Assistant Professor in Environmental Archaeology, to start on 1 September 2023 or as soon thereafter as possible. The successful candidate will be active in research and committed to teach in Environmental Archaeology, with a strong preference for the fields of archaeobotany, geoarchaeology, palaeoecology and/or landscape historical ecology, in all cases with the expectation of a strong interest in their relationships to people and societies. We seek someone with an active engagement in both fieldwork and expert lab-based analysis, who complements and helps to integrate existing specialisms within the department after recent and pending retirements, and whose approach is broad, theoretically informed and interdisciplinary.

The Department values traditional research on macro- and micro-remains, but equally seeks to recruit a forward-looking archaeological scientist and thinker who will push the boundaries by applying cutting-edge methods (field and lab-based) to address challenges relating to current and future societal and environmental change. The appointed candidate may also have oversight of the Department's extensive ecological reference collections, and will be expected to be active in management of the appropriate sector of the Department's outstanding suite of laboratories. There are excellent opportunities to work with the highly regarded Cambridge Archaeological Unit, whose research is primarily focused on the local region. Potential collaborations with the Departments of Geography, Plant Sciences, Earth Sciences and/or the Cambridge Conservation Initiative are also welcome. The Department is interested in receiving applications from those whose portfolio or plans include internationally significant work in NW Europe (including the British Isles), although candidates who work in all regions of the world are equally strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the creation of new research and teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate) in Environmental Archaeology, working within the exciting framework and opportunities of a large Department committed to interdisciplinary approaches. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute actively to the University's aim of developing wider strategic connections and initiatives. The appointment made will be permanent, subject to a probationary period of five years.

Applicants invited for interview will be asked to make a presentation on their research and give a short teaching sample lecture on a specified topic, will meet staff and students individually and in groups, and will have an interview with the Appointments Committee. Interviews will take place in Cambridge at the end of April 2023.
