Position Summary          

Governors State University (University Park, IL), a minority-majority institution, invites applications for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of History to begin in the Fall 2020 semester.

We seek a History teacher-scholar who is committed to enhancing our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusivity to complement existing faculty strengths. The successful candidate will contribute to our program by incorporating scholarly expertise on underrepresented and/or marginalized groups into courses. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to teach courses in at least one geographical area outside the United States, preferably Asia, Africa, the Middle East, or World and/or have training or teaching experience from a transnational perspective. Responsibilities include teaching multiple sections of survey courses in U.S. History, upper-level major requirements (methods, public history, thesis), courses in area(s) of specialization, and interdisciplinary first year seminars. Candidates should provide evidence of strong teaching skills and the potential for a strong record of scholarship. A Ph.D. in relevant field of study is required at time of appointment.


Governors State University is the only regional public comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving more than 5,500 students annually. New faculty at GSU must demonstrate enthusiasm and ability to work with students at all levels, from first-year to graduate.


The BA Program in History is part of a thriving, diverse Humanities Department that includes American Studies, Black Studies, Global Studies, Latin American/Caribbean/Latina/o Studies, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Spanish. The Humanities Department is a unit within the Division of Arts and Letters. History faculty collaborate with colleagues and students across disciplines and can hold dual appointments.

GSU is a national leader in successful transfer of community college students to universities and is leading through the Kresge-supported Dual Degree Program, with features such as tuition lock-in at GSU for academically eligible community college students who commit to earn an Associate Degree and attend college full-time. GSU offers a wide variety of master’s programs and several applied doctoral degrees in health, counseling fields, and Interdisciplinary Leadership. Our faculty are dedicated to advancing the teaching, research, and service missions of the university.


GSU’s 750-acre campus encompasses the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park yet is conveniently located within easy reach of Chicago and surrounding communities with a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. Minimum Qualifications

•             Ph.D. in History or related field by August 16, 2020.

•             Teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

•             Demonstrated scholarly expertise on underrepresented and/or marginalized groups.


Preferred Qualifications

•             Experience with first-generation, culturally diverse, and/or non-traditional students.

•             Minor field or teaching experience in Asian, Middle Eastern, African, World, and/or transnational history.

•             Demonstrated ability to infuse course content with scholarship related to underrepresented and/or marginalized groups.

•             Experience or interest in designing and teaching online courses.

•             Evidence of teaching excellence.

•             Evidence of active research agenda and potential for strong scholarship.

•             The ability to contribute to minors in Black Studies; Global Studies; Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o Studies; Middle East and North African Studies.
