We invite applications for an Assistant Professor position in the Cognitive Science Department. We are interested in those with a research program to advance the science behind augmenting cognition, both to compensate for diminished capacity or to enhance normal cognition in such areas as reasoning, decision-making, memory, attention, perception, motivation, creativity and emotion regulation. Topics include but are not limited to:

• Research on cognitive absorption of tools,
• Smart on-body or in-body sensors and actuators,
• Wearable and body sensor networks,
• Augmented reality that enhances cognitive processes,
• Wearable / embeddable cognitive prostheses,
• Neural implants for enhancing memory, attention etc.,
• Statistical tools that can be incorporated into an on-body form to extract insight from complex sensor data

Engineering projects that incorporate sensing and AI are of interest as long as they incorporate fluid interaction and rely on a knowledgeable methodology showing the scientific basis for the mind-part and how it can be validly evaluated as a successful cognitive augmentation.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and supervise students, primarily at the undergraduate and graduate level, in topics related to their area of expertise in the Cognitive Science Department and conduct extramurally funded research.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree in cognitive science, engineering, computer science or related fields to augmenting by the start date of the position. The preferred candidate will have strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity.
