The Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track position in Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a start date of August 2020. We seek candidates with strong teaching and research skills that complement our undergraduate curriculum and current faculty expertise. Successful candidates will contribute to our program through excellent undergraduate instruction and undergraduate and graduate student advising. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their teaching, mentoring and advising, will contribute to the diversity, inclusion and retention priorities of the department and university.

 

 

 

The position has a role assignment of 75% teaching and advising, 15% research and 10% service. Instruction is delivered by a variety of methods (e.g., face-to-face, interactive video broadcast and online) to students at the Logan campus, several regional campuses and online.

 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

 

 

 

(1) teach required undergraduate courses, including social theory

 

(2) teach courses in at least one of four areas of our undergraduate curriculum (Crime & Deviance, Social Inequality, People, Place & Change and/or Social Health & Well-Being)

 

(3) advise undergraduate and graduate students

 

(4) contribute to scholarship in teaching and/or one of three graduate specialty areas (Demography, Environmental & Community Sociology or Social Inequality)

 

(5) provide service to the department, university and profession

 

Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications: (1) A PhD in Sociology or closely related field; (2) demonstrated accomplishments in undergraduate teaching; (3) teaching experience in face-to-face and online formats; and (4) the ability to contribute to the diversity, inclusion and retention priorities of the department and university.

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: (1) A record of successful student advising and mentoring; (2) experience in undergraduate curriculum development; (3) experience in undergraduate program development; (4) experience with interactive video broadcast (IVC) and/or hybrid formats; and (5) demonstrated commitment to recruitment and retaining underrepresented students.

The Sociology Program is housed within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
