Spelman College seeks teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. All tenure-track candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, assist in curriculum development, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment.


Position Summary          

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications to fill a tenure-track appointment in Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2020.

We are seeking a candidate whose work shows how race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality inform place-making within U.S. urban and rural communities. Applicants should have a specialization in urban and/or rural sociology with a demonstrated interest in the significance of place and space for racial, ethnic, and gender formations. Sub-areas of expertise may include (but are not limited to): urban inequalities, including health access and disparities, food security, racial and ethnic stratification, social institutions, and social movements. The ideal candidate’s scholarship and teaching should reflect an intersectional methodological and theoretical lens. Candidates are expected to teach in the department’s core curriculum, including Introduction to Sociology, History of Social Thought, and Contemporary Social Theory, as well as an array of Sociology elective courses in their area of specialization that contribute to our department’s course offerings. The candidate will also be expected to serve as a reader on students’ Senior Theses, which is a capstone requirement for all majors. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated scholarship and teaching which reflects a feminist methodological lens supported by expertise in specific methodologies, i.e., GIS mapping, qualitative and/or quantitative methods. Spelman College is a teaching-intensive institution with a teaching load of three courses per semester. Candidates should describe in their cover letter how their teaching would contribute to the Sociology and Anthropology Department. The ideal candidate should be willing to work closely with students at a liberal arts college and possess a demonstrated interest and/or experience with interdisciplinary problem-posing that is grounded in the discipline of sociology.



Persons currently holding a Ph.D. in Sociology are preferred. “ABD” candidates in Sociology will be considered as long as the degree will be conferred by the time of hire. Previous experience teaching courses in sociology is required.
