The Department of Political Science at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University, invites applications for 1 assistant professorship position of 4 years. The position offers applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new externally funded research project on Nordic approaches to radicalization prevention (HEXNA) as well as projects focused on the importance of personality in public leadership carried out at the Crown Prince Frederik Center for Public Leadership.

 

The starting date is November 1st 2019 or subject to mutual agreement.

 

The HEXNA research project

This project investigates how variation in multiagency approaches to preventing radicalization and countering violent extremism shape perceptions of the approach’s legitimacy and levels of mutual trust – among involved public stakeholders as well as citizens – in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Furthermore, the project asks to what degree variation in perceived legitimacy and trust is linked to variation in the effectiveness of multiagency collaboration and prevention of radicalization. Methodologically the position calls predominantly for experience with survey design and the analysis of survey experimental data. Data will be collected among the core professional groups of the Nordic multiagency approach to radicalization prevention – school teachers, social workers and police officers – but also the general public and the policy target groups (vulnerable youth/communities). The project is funded by NORDFORSK.

 

Crown Prince Frederik Center for Public Leadership: Personality and public leadership

The leadership center aims to provide relevant knowledge to public managers and decision makers at all levels about leadership that contributes to goal attainment in different types of public (and private) organisations. Personality plays a significant role for the leadership behavior of both political and administrative leaders, and it is a prioritised research topic in the leadership center. The applicant should therefore have motivation and competences to do innovate research on personality and leadership, using existing data in the center and collecting new data. Many of our papers are coauthored, and the new assistant professor will become a vital part of an interdisciplinary research group that focuses on top-level research, high-quality teaching and co-creation of knowledge with practitioners. Experience with and/or interest in field-experimental methods is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. 

 

 

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the overall objectives of the HEXNA-project by being involved in data collection, data analysis as well as writing journal articles and other publications. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the study of personality and public leadership at the Crown Prince Frederik Center for Public Leadership.

Besides contributing to the specified project and center objectives, candidate will have the opportunity to define his/her own research areas within the overall framework of the HEXNA-project and the Crown Prince Frederik Center for Public Leadership.

 

In addition to these research tasks, the successful candidate will take part in teaching activities within the sections of Political Sociology and Public Administration and Management at the Department of Political Science.

 

 

Your qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD relevant to the academic areas of the Department of Political Science and have research experience of broad relevance to the advertised position.

 

The HEXNA-project involves primarily quantitative studies including surveys and survey experiments. Candidates with strong methods competencies in one or both of these areas are therefore preferred. In addition, experience with measuring personality and analysing individual differences in leadership behaviors, preferences, perceptions etc. is preferred.

 

Candidates must be able to teach selected courses about political sociology and public leadership.

 

Personal skills e.g. in regard to communication and collaboration will also be considered.
