About the position


The University of Stavanger is seeking an Associate Professor in Sociology.


As an Associate Professor, you will primarily teach and supervise students at bachelor's, Master’s and PhD level within the subject area, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research areas at the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses.


The development/use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research, and academic/artistic development work, will be included in the position.

Academic community


The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Media and Social Sciences.


The person who is appointed will be given a special responsibility on the department's bachelor's degree in sociology, but may also be assigned teaching at the master's level and supervision at the master's and doctoral level. Current teaching assignments at the bachelor program in sociology will in particular be topics within social inequality.


It is expected that the person who is hired carries out research and publishes in scientific journals and books. It is also expected that the person employed will support and participate in the other activities at the faculty and may undertake tasks across departmental and faculty boundaries.

Qualification requirements


We are seeking an associate professor with a PhD or equivalent qualification in sociology.


You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, or complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date. The course will be provided by the university.


The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. The person who will be employed, must have good command of and be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at the time of employment. The person who will be employed will be expected to be able to teach in English.


When assessing applications, emphasis will be given to:


    international and national publications, with emphasis on publications in the last five years

    good insight into research methods

    scientific competence in the research field of social inequality. Among relevant themes within the study of inequality, are the sociology of culture and welfare studies.

    understanding and interest in empirical sociology across sociological sub-disciplines

    ability to obtain external funding for research

    educational experience and interests

    good collaboration skills


It is a strategic goal for the department to increase the portfolio of externally funded projects, in particular from the Center for Internationalization of Education, the Research Council of Norway and the EU. Therefore, it is an adventage if you have experience from the development and implementation of externally funded research and teaching projects nationally and internationally.

    ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitiveness, and motivation to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others

General information


Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works/documented artistic activity and documented teaching competence. The committe will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.


If you do not satisfy key parts of the qualification requirements, you may have your application rejected before applications are submitted to the expert committee for assessment.


Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.


In the absence of applicants with sufficient scientific expertise, the university may consider temporarily designating an appointee for up to three years, during which time he/she will endeavour to gain the qualifications necessary for a permanent position. The applicant must be capable of gaining the necessary qualifications during the period of employment.


The university aims to recruit more women into professor positions; thus, if several applicants are considered to have equal qualifications, a woman will be given priority over a man.


It is a prerequisite that the appointee has a residence which enables him or her to be present at/available to the academic community during ordinary working hours.
