Position Description

The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Ukrainian History.

  • The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Anticipated start date: July 1, 2026.

  • The successful candidate will also be eligible to be named the John Yaremko Chair of Ukrainian History for a five-year term, renewable following a favourable review.


Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD degree in History or a related area.

  • A clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

  • Research and teaching interests that complement and enhance existing departmental strengths.

  • An established international reputation.

  • Ability to sustain and lead innovative and independent research.

  • Capacity to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research programme.

Note: Specialists of all eras and areas of Ukrainian history are encouraged to apply.


Evidence of Excellence

Research

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence through:

  • Sustained high-impact contributions and publications with top-ranked presses and in field-relevant journals.

  • Research statement submission.

  • Presentations at significant conferences.

  • Awards and accolades.

  • Other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.

  • Strong endorsements from referees.

Teaching

Evidence of excellence in teaching includes:

  • Teaching accomplishments.

  • Teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (see below).

  • Strong letters of reference.


Rank and Salary

  • The rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • The upper end of the salary range exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum.
