About the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS)

Established in 2016, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at HBKU aims to enrich society in Qatar and beyond through transformative educational and research experiences. The College offers graduate programs and research spanning the humanities and social sciences, focusing on intercultural communication, women and society, digital humanities, translation, and accessibility studies.

In addition to five master’s degree programs, CHSS offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Position Summary

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at HBKU invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor of Practice in English.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Professional and Technical Writing, Second Language Writing/Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field.

We welcome candidates from a wide range of specializations who have demonstrated excellence or strong preparation in teaching undergraduate writing. Expertise or interest in areas such as Scientific Writing, Professional and Technical Communication, Rhetoric and Public Speaking, Second Language Writing, and Generative AI is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will contribute to HBKU’s mission of becoming a world-class research university and will support CHSS’s efforts to provide high-quality, innovative instruction that fosters human capacity development in Qatar and the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct assigned courses or seminars to provide high-quality education and foster academic excellence among students.

• Supervise independent study activities and guide students in their research and academic pursuits.

• Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to students, supporting their academic and professional development.

• Serve on and chair university and college committees, contributing to institutional governance and planning.

• Participate in departmental initiatives and community engagement to enhance the institution’s impact and reach.

• Contribute to professional service relevant to the academic specialty.

• Participate in curriculum development, including course materials and innovative instructional methods.

• Represent HBKU at conferences, workshops, and professional development activities.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

• Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university.

• 6–8 years of full-time university teaching experience in higher education or a related industry, with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity.

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum/program development.

• Research and scholarly achievements appropriate for the rank of Associate Professor at a major research university.

• Evidence of participation in academic or professional societies and scholarly activities.

• A growing record of scholarly endeavors, including funded research, publications, or creative outputs.

• Regional and international recognition within the scholarly discipline.

• Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cross-cultural engagement.

• Ability to collaborate effectively within HBKU and with partner institutions.
