The Department of Politician Science and the V-Dem institute are now looking for an Asscociate Researcher full time for 1 year.

Job assignments

The initial main task is to participate in and lead a team of research assistants collecting factual, country-specific data on how Covid-19-related measures affect democratic rights and institutions, for the Pandemic Backsliding- project at the V-Dem Institute ( ).

Other main tasks will entail research on illiberal and populist political parties as well as the role of civil society in democratization including actively participating in scholarly discussions and seminars, compiling and evaluating information, and processing data for papers and projects and contribute to the drafting of papers.

In addition, the successful candidate(s) may be asked to perform supportive tasks for various projects and activities conducted at the V-Dem Institute, including data collection and drafting of texts for academic and non-academic audiences.


A master degree in political science is required. For the initial work tasks demonstrated previous experience of working with quantitative research on democratization or autocratization using the V-Dem dataset is required as well as demonstrated previous experience of collecting cross-national information on democratic institutions and practices and translating it into quantitative codlings. Previous experience of training and leading research assistants is highly meritorious.

For the following work tasks previous experience of research in European populist parties and the role of civil society in democratization is required. Previous experience of contributing independently to the drafting of academic papers on democratization and autocratization is also a requirement. Knowledge about the Sweden Democrats is highly meritorious. Proficiency in Swedish is a merit.

To be successful in this position you need to be an experienced problem sovler with very good communication skills in both spoken and written English. Excellent planning-, organizational- and time management skills are also needed.

This position requires good skills in the Microsoft Office package, particularly Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. It also requires proficiency in EndNote, Dropbox, and STATA. Familiarity with Toggl, Slack, Skype, and Zoom are meritorious.

Personal qualities such as social skills and collaborative skills are of great importance.
