Job description

The Department of Organization Sciences and the Division of Science, Business & Innovation (SBI) are looking for a full-professor (0.8-1.0 fte) for a chair in organizational and technological innovation and societal resilience. Your research will address the cutting–edge topics of organizational and technological innovations and entrepreneurship in demanding societal contexts. You will use research to advance theoretical approaches on organizational and technological innovation on the backdrop of current complex societal problems and disseminate and communicate these theories to stakeholders in academia and beyond.

In research you will pursue a multi-perspective, multidisciplinary approach on organizational and technological innovation in relation to solutions that lead to resilience. Special attention will be given to develop a unique understanding of the linkage between social concerns and technological innovation by considering the nature of sustainable entrepreneurship and organizational change. In education you will be involved in both Organization Sciences and Science, Business & Innovation programs, including bachelor and master. Besides, you will be engaged in other educational activities such as training, mentoring and PhD supervision.

The chair holder is expected

  • to take responsibility for the development and implementation of research, valorization and educational activities and have teaching competence in your subject area
  • to generate innovative research output and engage actively in high quality research and publications, increasing the visibility of the chair (e.g. via international journal articles, keynotes at international conferences and valorization products)
  • to acquire (funding for) prestigious grant (2nd and 3th money stream) in your subject areas
  • to develop and maintain an academic and professional network related to research, teaching and valorization of your subject matters
  • to inspire and lead junior and senior researchers who are active in your subject areas
  • to supervise bachelor, master and PhD students
  • to take a lead in governance/admin and show leadership in the Department of Organization Sciences and the Division of Science, Business & Innovation



  • hold a PhD degree and has subsequently engaged in quality research in your field, witnessed by international publications as well as acknowledgement as an expert in the field
  • have been successful in attracting substantial research funds
  • have a proven track record as a seasoned teacher and developer/coordinator/director of (parts) of academic educational programs
  • have a proven ability to build bridges between people and disciplines
  • are able to build relationships in a multidisciplinary environment, across departmental and faculty borders
  • have a rich network of representatives of organizations outside university that is relevant for valorization of your subject matters
  • are fluent in Dutch and English

This vacancy is subject to the VU’s professorship policy and a professorship position cannot be combined with another position at the VU.

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of € 5 749 (scale H.2) and a maximum €8371 (scale H.2), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The appointment will initially be for 5 years. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will become a permanency.

Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences examines the major social problems of our time from multiple perspectives. From bullying at school to dealing with transnational immigration, from the rise of populist politicians to creating a self-reliant society. About the department Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science encourages scientists and students to find sustainable natural scientific solutions to the complex social issues of this day and age. The faculty practices science by addressing every manner of subject, from forest fires to big data, from obesity to medication, and from molecules to the moon. The collaboration between scientists working on natural scientific fundamental and applied research, education and valorization allows communities to be built beyond the borders of the various disciplines, following new and innovative pathways.

Department of Organization Sciences

The mission of the Department of Organization Sciences is to advance the understanding of organizational processes through the lens of organizations as interdependent systems. Interdependence plays an important role in both internal organizational processes (cooperation and conflict between coworkers at micro-level and between teams and departments at meso-level) and external organizational processes, how organizations cooperate and compete within their environment at macro-level. The department composes four research clusters that focus on: Organizational Ethnography; Organizational Theory; Organizational Behavior; and Organizational Change and Resilience as well as teaching  joint bachelor program in collaboration with the department of Political Science and Public Administration and two major master programs (Dutch and English) in organization studies.

Division of Science, Business & Innovation

The Division of Science, Business & Innovation (SBI) is a joint organization that is led by the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Science, in close cooperation with the faculty’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. SBI runs a bachelor program, a master program and a research program in the area of science based and technology driven innovation in the areas of energy and sustainability, and life and health. To this end, it cooperates with the School of Business and Economics and with the Faculty of Social Sciences of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
