Position Overview

TMU invites applications from internal faculty for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Immigration and Migration. This position aims to establish a world-leading research program on migration, settlement, and integration, with a focus on equity, social justice, and community engagement.

The chairholder will:

  • Lead innovative, externally funded research in immigration and migration.

  • Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career researchers.

  • Engage in research partnerships with immigrant communities, government, and policy actors.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology and migration studies.

  • Contribute to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives within TMU and the wider research community.


Research Focus

  • Structural, historical, and contemporary factors affecting migration decisions.

  • Impacts of immigration and refugee policies globally, analyzed through critical frameworks addressing racism, colonization, and oppression.

  • Applied research addressing labor market transitions, systemic barriers, social cohesion, and knowledge economy development.

  • Engagement with immigrant, migrant labor, and refugee communities, ensuring research benefits are reciprocal.


Candidate Profile

Candidates must:

  • Hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree in Sociology or a related social science.

  • Be a tenured Associate Professor or Professor (or expected promotion to full professor within 1–2 years).

  • Be recognized as a world-class researcher in migration and immigration studies.

  • Have a strong record of research leadership, mentoring, and attracting external funding.

  • Demonstrate commitment to EDI, accessibility, and community engagement.

  • Show excellence in teaching diverse student populations and developing inclusive curricula.

  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – including publications, conference presentations, and community-engaged research activities.

  3. Research statement – significance, originality, and impact of current research (up to 3 pages).

  4. Teaching statement – up to 3 pages, with evidence of inclusive teaching practices and course materials.

  5. Names and contact info of three academic referees.

  6. EDI statement – detailing mentoring, recruitment, and creating an inclusive research environment.
