The Centre for Applied Health Economics (CAHE) is self-funded, with an emphasis on teamwork, based within the School of Medicine and aligned with the Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ). The Centre has several programs of research in health economics, including health technology assessment for the Australian Government, multiple research grants with national bodies (eg ARC, NHMRC), and has research programs around preference elicitation techniques such as discrete choice experiments, priority-setting including multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), and other applied technical fields including the expected value of perfect information (EVPI).

The opportunity
The Director of CAHE is a senior research position in the University to provide leadership in the economics of healthcare. They will maintain links with university, industry and government sectors and have the capacity to expand the Centre’s existing national and international networks. The Director will manage and develop the Centre’s collaborative partnerships within Griffith University and with external partners.

There may be the opportunity for the incumbent to undertake the role of the Program Director of the Economics, Policy and Innovation Centre for Health Systems (EPIC) – one of the four programs of the MHIQ.

The position is for a fixed term five year full time position renewable by agreement, subject to performance.


About you
The incumbent is expected to be a leader in their chosen field within health economic research and will provide leadership to the Centre. This leadership will include the management of the research environment, resources and facilities and will be instrumental in representing the CAHE.


In addition to providing leadership to the Centre, this challenging role is responsible for attracting significant external funding for research, liaising with other senior academic managers, nurturing national and international collaborations, and representing the Centre within the University and externally among local, national, and international stakeholders.


This position is designed for the incumbent to provide high level expertise, mentorship and support to staff in undertaking pragmatic clinical trials and implementation trials, measuring health outcomes (eg strength of preferences around quality of life), health service and economic outcomes. Oversight of the translation of research outcomes to policy and practice will be an important component of the role, therefore, the incumbent will have a comprehensive understanding of the Australian health care system.


Salary range


A salary package that includes a base salary of $179,288 per annum, and an employer superannuation contribution of 17% of base salary will be offered. Attractive salary packaging arrangements and management loading are also available.
